    提到民谣摇滚艺人，尼尔·杨（Neil Young）这个名字恐怕是无人不晓。毋庸置疑，发誓要将自己的一生都献给摇滚乐的加拿大民谣老将Neil Young是摇滚乐诞生以来最有影响力的艺术家之一，也是近年来为数不多的仍保持着旺盛创作精力的老牌艺人之一。

    1945年11月，Neil Young出生于加拿大多伦多，父亲是加拿大著名的体育记者Scott Young。在双亲离异之后，Neil Young跟随母亲来到了Winnipeg。正如那个时代的很多年轻人一样，Neil Young从小就自学吉他，并在高中时开始组乐队。在有过不少组乐队的经验之后，Young真正的音乐生涯开始于在加州组建的Buffalo Springfield乐队。1966年秋，Neil Young和Stephen Stills在内的另外三位乐队成员开始录制乐队首张专辑《Buffalo Springfield》。Buffalo Springfield乐队在短暂的两年内共发行了三张专辑，Neil Young的创作天分得以充分发挥，在队期间创作出《Mr. Soul》 ，《Broken Arrow》，《Expecting to Fly》和《I Am a Child》等著名歌曲。在短暂的一进一出之后，Neil Young在1968年5月正式离开了Buffalo Springfield乐队，开始了个人的单飞生涯，同年宣告了乐队的解散。

    1969年1月，Neil Young和加拿大老乡Joni Mitchell的经纪人Elliot Roberts合作在Reprise公司发行了首张个人专辑《Neil Young》，专辑由Jack Nitzsche参与共同制作。同年，Young结识了the Rockets乐队并开始经常合作。之后Young将the Rockets改名为Crazy Horse，并将其作为第二张个人专辑《Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere》的伴奏乐队。Young的著名歌曲《Cinnamon Girl》和《Down by the River》都出自该专辑。在个人发行过两张专辑之后，Neil Young又加入到Crosby, Stills和Nash中，于1970年3月跟该组合合作发行了专辑《Deja Vu》。这个时期是Young的一个创作高峰。在1970年年底和1972年，Young又分别发行了专辑《After the Gold Rush》和《Harvest》，这两张专辑成为Neil Young最畅销的专辑，同时也奠定了Neil Young在摇滚届的地位。《Harvest》中的歌曲《Heart of Gold》还成为Neil Young唯一一首冠军单曲。

    在七十年代中后期发行了另外几张畅销专辑（如《Tonight's the Night》，《Comes a time》，《Rust never sleeps》）之后，Neil Young进入了个人音乐生涯的一段低潮期。在1983年，Young同合作多年老东家Reprise公司分手，转投Geffen公司，而事实证明，这个阶段是Young事业上遭受困难最多的一个时期，这个时期的Young受到德国著名乐队发电站（Kraftwerk）的影响，将电声引入到自己的音乐中，并在专辑中作了不少实验性的作品。虽然在商业上很不成功，但对音乐无比执著的Neil Young并没有放弃音乐。1987年，在Geffen公司发行最后一张专辑《Life》之后，Neil Young毅然决定离开，重新回到Reprise公司的怀抱，并在1989年发行了回归之后的崛起之作《Freedom》，《Freedom》成为继《Rust never sleeps》之后最受舆论好评的专辑。而从1990年的《Ragged Glory》开始，Crazy Horse乐队再次开始和Neil Young合作。另外，此时逐渐走红的一些年轻的乐队如音速青年（Sonic Youth），声音花园（Soundgarden）和珍珠果酱（Pearl Jam）等都公开表示在他们乐队的成长过程中均受到过Neil Young的影响，而Neil Young也因此获得了“Grunge教父”的美誉。

    1992年，录制《Harvest》专辑时大部分的原班人马和Young再度携手出版了被称作《Harvest》“续集”的《Harvest Moon》。次年，Neil Young参加了MTV台举办的著名的“不插电”音乐会并发行记录本场演出的CD和DVD。同样在1993年，Geffen公司发行了Neil Young在该公司期间作品的精选，十分讽刺的取名为《Lucky thirteen》（幸运十三）。1994年，Young发行了另一张广受好评的专辑《Sleeps with Angels》，本张专辑还在Billboard 200专辑榜上打入前十，排在第九位。而Young在1995年和珍珠果酱乐队合作的专辑《Mirror Ball》不仅在Billboard 200专辑榜中排在第五位，还为Young赢得了当年的格莱美奖的“最佳摇滚男歌手表演奖”的提名。1996年，Neil Young还为著名独立电影导演吉姆·贾姆许（Jim Jarmusch）拍摄的电影《Dead Man》制作了电影的原声大碟。同年，Young发行另一张和Crazy Horse乐队合作的专辑《Broken Arrow》。

    在新世纪，Neil Young依然保持了旺盛的创作力。在2000年，2001年和2003年，Young分别发行专辑《Silver and Gold》，《Are You Passionate》和《Greendale》。2005年，Neil Young不幸身患脑病，但在纽约作完脑外科手术痊愈之后，令人敬佩的Young在05年9月再次发行唱片《Prairie Wind》。
